13 WAYS TO END SLEEPLESS NIGHTS
Here are 13 ways to end sleepless nights from the Globe: - Use the bedroom for sex and sleep, only. Don't surf the Internet or balance your checkbook there.
- If you can't fall asleep after 15 minutes or so, get up and do something relaxing. Don't lie there and become frustrated.
- Avoid any brain-stimulating activity before going to sleep.
- Don't eat heavy or spicy meals, which might cause heartburn or discomfort. Don't go to bed hungry or too full.
- Turn clocks away from you to avoid checking the time at night.
- Develop a relaxing ritual at bedtime, such as reading a calming book.
- Share any nightly care-giving duties with a partner, if possible.
- Avoid taking naps during the day or early evening. If you must rest, limit your catnap to 15 to 45 minutes.
- Get lots of stimulating exercise, but not before bed.
- Try to go to bed and get up at the same time every day.
- Take a warm bath or drink a hot nonalcoholic beverage before bed.
- Limit caffeine. If the insomnia is severe, avoid caffeine after lunch.
- If you are taking medications, your insomnia may be medical. You need to be evaluated by a medical practitioner or sleep specialist.
Why are some people naturally happy?
How can you acquire the ability to be happy? LHJ.com says that "Our habits do affect our happiness, and neuroscientists have recently discovered why. Habitual thoughts and behaviors create specific neural pathways in the wiring in our brains, the way water flowing downhill creates a groove in the earth. Brain researcher Richard Davidson, PhD, of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said, "Based on what we know about the plasticity of the brain, we can think of happiness as a skill no different from learning to play a musical instrument... it is possible to train our minds to be happy." So how can we retrain our brain to be happy? - Notice the happy things in your life, no matter how small. When you decide to look for the positive, your RAS (reticular activating system, a group of cells at the base of the brain stem that's responsible for turning on your memory system and allowing it to bring anything important to your attention) makes sure that's what you see.
- Choose the happier thought. The next time you're faced with a challenging situation that gives rise to negative thoughts and bad feelings, find an equally true thought about the situation that makes you feel better -- and lean into it.
- Tend to your relationships. Scores of studies have demonstrated that having good social relationships is one of the strongest predictors of happiness.
- Find passion and purpose. Bringing a sense of passion to mundane activities will boost your happiness, but so will taking the time to find your true passions. Think about what activities most absorb you and analyze what it is about those activities that make you happy.
The topping you put on your ice cream reveals more about the kind of friend you are than it does your sweet tooth
"There's a real connection between how you indulge yourself and how you affect your pals," says psychologist Frances McWright. "Research shows that the way you treat the people you care about most is a direct reflection of how you treat yourself." - No frills -- You take your ice cream straight, and your approach to life is no-nonsense too. Your clear-eyed vision of what you want and where you're going to makes you an important asset to your pals because solving problems is your bag. You're seldom swayed by your emotions which truly makes you a rock in crisis situations.
- Caramel Sauce indicates a person who's spontaneous and open to the experiences of the world.
- Marshmallow cream -- You're a soft-hearted person whose gentle nature makes you a nurturing, kind friend. The lucky folks in your inner circle appreciate your compassion and nonjudgemental attitude. They know you're never too busy to lend help and support when they're in need of a strong shoulder or wise advice.
- Fruit Toppings reveal a colorful character with a zest for life.
- Hot fudge -- You are the soul of discretion, and your friends know that any secret they tell you will go to the grave. You're also quite content with your life, making you an upbeat person whose sunny disposition attracts a large group of pals. You cherish your friendships -- many of them began in school -- and treat your pals with loving care.
- Candy sprinkles -- You're the Peter Pan of your crowd, remaining young at heart whatever your age. Your childlike delight with life is so infectious that you're a treasured cohort whether you're on a cross-country trip or organizing a community project. And your easygoing personality attracts new friends wherever you go.
- Whipped Cream with a Cherry is the choice for bold, brassy types who set their own style.
- Nuts and syrup -- You're a ball of fire who's at the center of your circle of friends. Always the first person on the list for any party, your pals know having you around guarantees a good time. With your sparkling wit and flamboyant persona, you're never bored or boring. Best of all, beneath your exciting exterior beats the heart of a true-blue friend.

Nine Questions You Should Ask Your Boss
Here are nine questions to ask your boss that can help your career. (Just don't ask them all at once – your boss is probably a busy person.) MSN
"How do you measure success?" Employees often forget that their performances are graded in some form or another. In order to understand how your work is quantified, you should be speaking the same language as your boss. Find out if your manager is only concerned with numbers and results or if how you achieve them also matters, Onderick-Harvey advises. Then, you base your future work on his or her priorities. "What areas do I need to develop to advance my career?" This question shows your boss you are in control of your future and are not waiting for someone else to make things happen, Onderick-Harvey says. If you can articulate what your career goals are, your boss can tell you what experience you need to gain before you can move up the ladder.
"What strengths do I have that will help my career?" Don't be so focused on looking for your weaknesses that you forget to ask about your strong points. You might think you know what your strengths and weaknesses are, but your boss could have a different opinion. This question isn't an excuse to beg for a compliment; it's an opportunity to show the boss you want to steer your own career, Onderick-Harvey says.
"How often are performance evaluations conducted and who is in charge of them?" Basic questions such as this one are crucial to your performance, says Dr. Ivonne Chirino-Klevans, professor at Walden University, a distance-learning institution based in Minneapolis. Understanding the mechanics of your job should be a top priority at all times. Make sure you know if you have quarterly or annual goals to aim for and how they impact your daily tasks.
"What are the options for growth within the organization?" Although you might expect this question belongs only in a job interview, it's worth asking even after you've been employed for a few years, Chirino says. Company structures change all the time and you should know what opportunities are open to you if you want to advance. Once you know what your options are, you can decide what your next move is, whether it's aiming for a new position or looking for a job with a better future.
"Do I understand this correctly?" When you have a project that has many components or a new set of guidelines, be certain you have a grasp on what your task is. Tackling an assignment without knowing you're on the right path leaves the opportunity for a rude awakening on the due date. Check in with your boss to ensure you understand everything the way he or she intends it. If you don't ask the right questions, you could derail your own career even though you're fully capable of doing the work, Chirino warns.
Caution: Use restraint when asking this question. No boss wants to repeat himself or herself ad nauseam.
"What can I do to help you?" This simple question is important but often forgotten, according to executive coach Suzanne Bates. Even if you can't help, your boss will take note of your offer. "It's lonely at the top, so if your boss sees you as someone who wants them to succeed, you stand out." "What is the most important priority we need to focus on?" This question often goes unasked because employees fear appearing incompetent. Really, it shows concern about your responsibilities and your team's goals. When you have several ongoing projects and your boss adds more to your workload, knowing how to prioritize grows difficult. Managers want to hear from employees who are concerned with improving business, says Gayle Lantz, an organizational development consultant and executive coach.
"Can I take on this task?" Too many employees take a laissez-faire attitude toward their careers and relinquish control to their bosses, says career expert Dr. Rachelle J. Canter. Bosses have their own lives to worry about, however, and don't have time to map your future. Rather than let your career meander, look for opportunities to prove you have initiative and leadership skills. Find ways to build experience and gain skills that you currently lack.

The House of Representatives voted in support of a bill that would permit the Justice Department to sue OPEC member countries for setting oil prices and limiting supplies. If passed, the legislation, which the House approved 324 to 84, would make OPEC oil producers follow the same antitrust laws that U.S. companies do. Legislators also voted to tug on Superman’s cape and mess around with Jim…… Experts have examined the handwriting of the presidential candidates to see what it says about their characters. Graphologists say handwriting can reflect a person's inner personality, including their ego, confidence and communication style. Experts say the writing reveals that Republican John McCain's signature shows a proud, idealistic but impulsive personality, while Obama's signature suggests high intelligence, but its illegibility shows he is protecting his privacy and Hillary Clinton's neat handwriting suggests that she's a perfectionist. I once had my handwriting analyzed, and the graphologist ran screaming from the room; don’t quite know what that meant…
A donkey is doing time in southern Mexico for assault and battery. The animal was locked up at a local jail that normally holds people for public drunkenness and other disturbances after it bit and kicked two men. Officer Sinar Gomez said the donkey will remain behind bars until its owner agrees to pay the men's medical bills. Police in Chiapas, Mexico have thrown animals in the slammer before, including a dog who was locked up for 12 days after biting someone. I so have a line here, but let’s move on…
and finally...a 29-year-old Swiss man died after falling from his hotel balcony while trying to best his friend in a spitting contest. After a night of drinking in the country's Italian district, the unidentified man took a running start up to his balcony to get more distance on his spit, but fell over the ledge and landed in the street. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Remember, if you spit, don’t dive and if you dive, don’t spit…

With a new American Idol about to be crowned, Carrie Underwood has been voted the favorite of all previous Idol winners, Reuters reports. According to a poll by AOL Television, 2005 winner Underwood was named most popular by 54 percent of respondents. Underwood has gone on to win Grammy, American Music, Billboard and Country Music Association awards. The first-ever American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson, came in second with 26 percent of the votes. In another poll, Former American Idol finalist, Sanjaya, was voted most likely to have a grass fire start in his hair…… The breathing disorder obstructive sleep apnea can cause neurological damage from oxygen deprivation. However, a new study shows that compounds found in green tea can help prevent damage to the brain, based on tests with rats. The common sleeping disorder involves a temporary collapse of soft tissues in the throat that block the airway during sleep, causing breathing to stop and start throughout the night, and the chronic loud snoring and gasping leads to sleepiness during the day and, eventually, to high blood pressure and memory lapses. What keeps me up at night is thinking about those lab rats…… and finally....a photographer was a little too close to the action at the state high school track championships in Utah and ended up getting speared by a javelin. YOUR FEET REVEAL YOUR PERSONALITY
Did you know that the features of your feet reveal things about yourself? Dr. Nancy Sax says so and here's what she has to say: - If your second toe is larger than the others -- You are dependable, conservative and you keep your emotions in check. You do well in the fields of medicine, banking and science. You're a good provider but don't expect any fireworks.
- If you have a big third toe -- Hot headed, unpredictable, and a temper that can go off at any time.
- If you have a big baby toe -- You're an eternal kid, always joyful and easy going.
- If you have long toes -- You are the thinkers of the world. Authors, philosophers and great world leaders have long toes.
- If you have little toes -- Timid yet not one to be backed against the wall. You can push it, but don't push it too far.
- If you have wide feet -- These are the hard workers of America with strong family values and ties to the church and community.
- If you have narrow feet -- Shy, quiet type who doesn't like to draw attention to themselves.
- If you have webbed toes -- You're a freak, not really. These people are the life of the party and make great salesman and entertainers.

Do you have a gas saving tip that actually works?
With gasoline prices hitting record levels, it seems everyone has a tip on how to save fuel. Much of the advice is well-intentioned, but in the end, much of it won't lower your gas bill. Here's a look at a few misconceptions floating around the internet: - Fill your tank in the morning - You may have heard that it's best to fill your gas tank in the early morning while the fuel is cold. The theory goes that fluids are more dense at lower temperatures, so a gallon of cold gas actually has more gas molecules than a gallon of warmer gas. But the temperature of the gasoline as it comes out of the nozzle varies little during the course of the day, according to Consumer Reports.
- Change your air filter - Maintaining your car is important, but a clean air filter isn't going to save you any gas. Modern engines have computer sensors that automatically adjust the fuel-air mixture as an increasingly clogged air filter chokes off the engine's air supply.
- Use premium fuel - With prices already over $4.00 a gallon, premium gasoline is a hard sell these days. But a lot of drivers think because their owners' manual recommends premium, they'll get better fuel economy with it. Really, they may be paying more money for nothing. Newer cars for which premium is "recommended" - but not "required" - won't suffer with regular fuel.
- Pump up your tires - Proper tire inflation is important for a number of reasons. Under-inflated tires are bad for handling and can even cause a crash. Improper tire inflation also causes tires to wear out faster and to heat up more, which could trigger a dangerous high-speed blow-out. According to on-the-road driving tests by both Consumer Reports and auto information site Edmunds.com, underinflated tires reduce fuel economy, so proper inflation is key. But you should never over-inflate your tires. They'll get you slightly better fuel economy because there will be less tread touching the road, reducing friction. But that means less grip for braking and turning. The added risk of a crash isn't worth the extra mile a gallon you might gain.
- To A/C or not A/C - There's no question air-conditioning makes extra work for the engine, increasing fuel use. But car air conditioners are much more efficient today than they used to be. In around-town driving, using the A/C will drop fuel economy by about a mile a gallon. Meanwhile, driving at higher speeds with the windows down greatly increases aerodynamic drag.
- Bolt-ons and pour-ins. Before you buy a device that's supposed to make your car more fuel-efficient or pour in an allegedly gas-saving additive, ask yourself this: Don't you think oil and car companies aren't doing everything they can to beat their competitors? There are a number of these gas-saving devices that are generally useless.

Britney Spears is vacationing in Costa Rica with Mel Gibson. Gibson, a former Malibu neighbor of Spears is hosting the singer and her father at his island home, where they will relax with Gibson and his wife Robin. Paparazzi are hailing the trip as a break-through in cost-cutting, as it will allow them to photograph two train wrecks at the same location...A Fort Worth, TX man trying to scratch an itch on his back decided the best method would be to use a revolver. Jorge Espinal, 44, was drinking beer and playing cards with friends around 3 am when he got an itch that he just couldn't scratch. He went in the other room and grabbed the first thing he could find, the revolver. Of course it went off and Espinal was rushed to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Just a case of natural thinning of the heard if you ask me. Either that or proof that some sort of testing, ESPECIALLY IQ testing should be done in order to purchase a fire arm...
An immigrant family left a 23-month-old boy in the Vancouver airport and learned he was missing only after being contacted by flight attendants during the next leg of their trip. The mix-up occured when the child's parents and grandparents, travelling seperately thought the other had the child. The whole misadventure will be chronicled in the upcoming film "Foster Home Alone" starring Micauley Caulkin.and finally...From the department of "I've always wanted to do that...Cincinatti Reds outfielder Ken Griffey, Jr. is apparently still having fun at the ball park. The future Hall of Famer apparently owed team mate Josh Fogg $1500 from a wager between the two. Instead of simply writing a check to Fogg, Griffey had National City Bank deliver 60 cases containing 2500 PENNIES each to Fogg's locker at the ball park. No word as to how Fogg carted off the 150,000 pennies...and that's all of my bits and pieces for today....see you on the radio!!!
